What does Battle mean to you?

Battle of the Bamboo is the key… It is the key that entice the younger generations to become more knowledgeable of Filipino culture. History can be told in a single dance. Hard work & dedication are definitely shown by the dance groups as they perform to unravel stories that have been passed down through generations of Filipino history.

What does Battle mean to you?

Battle is being able to get deeper into my own culture when I feel that I am drifting off. I feel that it connects me more to my family and heritage and I would hope to see it grow and prosper. With that I would like to know my history and appreciate my background more than I have in the past.

What does Battle mean to you?

Battle to me is not just about performing or watching a performance, but it's also about learning. I've performed for Battle of the Bamboo since I was a freshman in high school. Now that I'm in college 6 years later, I'm still able to learn about the filipino culture through dance and art.

What does Battle mean to you?

As one of many non-Filipino members of Filipinos in Alliance, Battle of the Bamboo has always been one of my favorite ways to learn about Filipino culture. Many schools across the Midwest spend months preparing for this event, especially us here at UIC, and nothing gives me more joy than watching all my friends up on stage sharing their story and culture through performance. I've been to three Battle of the Bamboo's so far, volunteering for each one and performing in two. It's not just the meaning of the event that's important. This year, being part of the planning committee, I never knew how much work went into it. I'd like to give a hand to this year's Battle Staff and every staff before it. You guys have done an amazing job to make a memorable show for everyone.

What does Battle mean to you?

Battle is a place where all schools come together to show off their interpretation of culture, create a story, and to display their interpretation of what the years theme is. This years theme is Ating Simula which means Our Beginning. This year the anticipation is arising as many schools try to create dances and stories that represent their beginning.

What does Battle mean to you?

Battle is one of the the most creative ways Filipino culture is embraced. Whether you are performing, watching, or pulling the string behind the scenes, everyone is encompassed by the past and future filipino culture.
